Have you ever had a dream in which you’ve been cleaning a bathroom while filmmaker Henry Jaglom (Venice/Venice) talks over the phone about movie sex? Well, now you can have that experience vicariously via Rainier Judd’s brief, weird introductions to each chapter in this short film anthology on the theme of seduction (of one or another kind). The section called “MarqU” offers Seth Edelstein’s sweet World War II anecdote, Anticipating Sarah, in which an earnest G.I. returning home from European trenches awaits a woman to whom he has written but never seen. Marianne Olsen Ulrichsen’s Kom is a touching tale of an old woman’s erotic recollections from youth and the richness of love in winter. Hisao is Masahiro Sugano’s startling, herky-jerky, experimental document about an underground Japanese singer-songwriter lured by fame. There’s also an award-winning, animated piece called Lily and Jim, a witty and knowing testament to the ups and downs (mostly downs) of a blind date. Each of the films is accompanied by selectable production notes, and several feature alternate soundtracks, including a monologu by performance artist Annie Sprinkle for Kom. Certainly the biggest conversation piece among the remaining titles is Jeremy Boxer’s The Last Supper, which concerns a rather ordinary-looking, yuppie dinner party in which a small practical joke leads to a shocking conclusion. You’d swear the story is based on urban legend, but Boxer insists it was derived from fact. –Tom Keogh

Father of Lies is a classic story of good vs. evil. Nostalgic send-up of Bogart detective films of the ’40s boasts a spot-on impression of the famous star by Robert Sacchi, who made a career doing mostly the same. (That’s him in the Robert Zemeckis-helmed “You, Murderer” episode from Tales from the Crypt). The premise is that Sacchi plays a retired cop who gets plastic surgery to make himself look like Bogart, and then sets up shop as a private dick named Sam Marlow. But the plot is really just an excuse to pay tribute to Bogart’s detective films. Sacchi’s channeling of Bogie is so uncanny you’ll be positively mesmerized for about 30 minutes. And that’s the problem. While this amiable pastiche might help while away the evening in nostalgic reverie, it does a major disservice to the films it appears to idolize. That’s the problem with nostalgia: it usually jettisons all the depth and complexity of the original, leaving an indistinct fifth-generation clone, a fuzzy Xerox of a Xerox of a Xerox. So when the novelty of the flick begins to wane, there’s only the plot to fall back on for interest. And the plot is only there to have something upon which to hang references to Bogart flicks. The story largely mirrors The Maltese Falcon, with the great whatsit, the things dreams are made of, being a pair of sapphires known as the “eyes of Alexander.” The cast is composed of simulacra of past film greats: Gene Tierney (Michelle Phillips), Sidney Greenstreet (Victor Buono), and Peter Lorre (Herbert Lom)–not so successful, that last one. –Jim Gay

La Promesse draws on the considerable documentary acumen of its directors, Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne (Rosetta), to prove a revelation in narrative filmmaking. Shot on the outskirts of an industrial city in Belgium, the film follows Igor (Jeremie Renier), the 15-year-old son of a single parent named Roger (Olivier Gourmet) who rents squalid apartments to recently arrived immigrants, many of them illegal. As Igor struggles to hold down odd jobs while assisting his father in crooked dealings, the Dardenne brothers plunge the audience into the thick of difficult issus–immigration, cultural and racial bias, bureaucratic injustices–without overtly politicizing or diminishing any of their characters. When Igor promises to help a young African woman, he finds he must choose between loyalty to his father and his own conscience. The beauty is in how the Dardenne brothers seem to share in the viewer’s curiosity about the film’s outcome, having captured a world so charged yet unadorned you feel the surprise of each new scene alongside the directors. An extraordinary film that bears repeated viewings. –Fionn Meade

Oliver Reed cheerfully strolls the halls of his London high-rise office building with an ax slung over his shoulder. Impeccably dressed, nursing a mysterious smile under his dark brow, he looks every bit the well-dressed society thug as he renders his desk to kindling by way of resignation. Director Michael Winner knows how to kick off a film, and this antiestablishment satire is full of such gestures, mixed with wry humor and shaken by Reed’s underplayed charm and easy confidence. Reed is TV commercial wunderkind Andrew Quint, a 32-year-old success who chucks his job and status symbol lifestyle for a career editing a prestigious but impoverished literary journal. Quint’s decadent, cigar-chomping boss Jonathan Lute (Orson Welles) speaks softly and carries a big checkbook, constantly reappearing like a little devil whispering temptations into his ear with a cynical air. “I’m going to get an honest job,” Quint tells Lute. “Silly boy. There’s no such thing.” The script fires wildly at a myriad of targets: public schools, private sellouts, consumerism, and hypocrisy. What makes this mod twist on the angry young man genre work is that Quint is neither angry, young, nor particularly sincere. Obsessed with the idea of freedom, he never really confronts his own, self-made prison. Carol White costars as his latest girlfriend, a big-eyed beauty with a Julie Christie smile; Marianne Faithfull and Lynn Ashley appear as his two mistresses; and Harry Andrews is memorable as a lascivious author. –Sean Axmaker

SUMMER RENTAL: This routine comedy is about a series of misadventures during a family vacation at the beach and stars John Candy (who died of a heart attack while filming in Mexico in 1994) as John Chester and Karen Austin as his long-suffering wife Sandy. When the family leave for what turns out to be a pretty decrepit shack on a public beach, Jack eventually locks horns with the owner of this dubious piece of real estate, and their conflict terminates in a boat race in which Jack and his motley crew are at first glance, and even second, no match for the others in the race. In the meantime, there are plenty of skits with Jack dressed as anything from an ample, unintentional likeness of a geisha to the normal tourist dude in a Hawaiian shirt. His wife and daughter tackle their own problems, related to sex in one way or another, mostly another. FOUL PLAY: “Beware of the Dwarf,” whispers the hitchhiker to the beautiful librarian (Goldie Hawn) as he dies midway through a screening of This Gun Is Mine. Suddenly, Hawn is propelled into a world of wild chases, bizarre attempts on her life, and deadly encounters with an assortment of weird underworld characters. Academy Award winner Hawn teams with Chevy Chase (in his first starring motion picture assignment) – and with hilarious results. Chase plays the handsome San Francisco detective who becomes personally and professionally involved with all the off things happening to Hawn. Costarring a pre-Arthur Dudley Moore in one of his most delightful comic turns.
